Kabul – H. E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Salahuddin Rabbani, meet with the Assistant Secretary-General of the UN for Political Affairs, Miroslav Jenča, yesterday afternoon.
At the outset of the meeting, Mr. Rabbani provided the Assistant Secretary General with information about Afghanistan’s political, economic and security relations with the neighboring and regional countries emphasizing on the constructive role of the UN with respect to enhancing the level of cooperation among the regional countries, especially on fighting the menace of terrorism.
H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs said that thanks to the latest endeavors and active regional Afghan diplomacy, the international community now strongly believes that not only is terrorism the problem of Afghanistan, but also a common threat to the peace and security of the region. Therefore, we have to agree and work on a common regional strategy to combat terrorism.
Describing the role of the UN as very important to the success of the Afghan peace process, Mr. Rabbani reiterated that Afghanistan supported and welcomed all regional and international efforts with respect to leading the ship of the peace talks to the shore of safety and success.
Afterwards, Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General of the UN for Political Affairs appreciated the opportunity of meeting the Afghan President, the Chief Executive and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also commended the Afghan government’s endeavors on expanding its relations with the regional countries. Mr. Jenca said that the UN was ready to cooperate with Afghanistan on all issues, especially in respect of making the peace talks a great success.
At the end, Mr. Jenca suggested that on the threshold of extending the UNAMA mandate in Afghanistan, the UN should increase the level of cooperation with the Afghan public and private entities in different areas.
