Today, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, Ms. Kelly T. Clements & accompanying delegation called on the Deputy Foreign Minister, Alhaj Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, in Storay Palace.

The DFM said the current government intends to prevent further migration & repatriate former refugees. However, given the decades of war, unemployment & restrictions on banking & economy, doing so is a huge task & the government is in need of the international community. He also asked for UNHCR’s support with ensuring observance of the global compact on migration in the host countries as well as the issues related to documents & travel of Afghan refugees. Ms. Clements said that UNHCR is working to prepare a proper environment for return of IDPs and refugees & plans to expand its operations & increase its staff to attain this goal. She added that the issues faced by refugees will be raised with the relevant authorities during their travel to the host countries and during the tripartite meetings. The DFM assured the delegation to provide all the support as necessary for smooth delivery of UNHCR’s operations.
