The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan expresses its dismay at the adoption of Resolution 2721 despite the disagreement among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, according to which the Secretary General of the United Nations is requested to appoint a Special Envoy for Afghanistan.
It is noteworthy that the Security Council has adopted this resolution without consulting with the Afghan government despite its request for more time, discussion, and clarification regarding the evaluation of the special coordinator by two permanent members.
The government of Afghanistan reiterates that the appointment of an additional representative for Afghanistan in the existence of the UNAMA is considered unnecessary for Afghanistan is not a country at war and is now ruled by a central government that protects the country’s interests, it can fulfill its obligations, and can manage issues through bilateral and multilateral settings.
Also, the special envoys, throughout the contemporary history of Afghanistan and the world, have not only been unable to resolve any conflict but have made the situation more complicated by imposing alien models.
While we welcome all positive efforts by the United Nations for stronger and broader engagement with Afghanistan, our approach will ultimately be based on the immutable religious beliefs, cultural values, and national interests of the Afghan people. Accordingly, we call on the United Nations to consider the ground realities while making decisions regarding Afghanistan and not to be influenced by any party.
