U.S. Presidential Envoy for Calls on Foreign Minister

Today, Mr. Adam Boehler, U.S. Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs under President Donald Trump, leading a delegation, including Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Peace, called on IEA-Foreign Minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The meeting focused on in-depth discussions regarding development of bilateral relations, consular issues, investment opportunities in Afghanistan, & other matters of mutual interest.
The two sides underlined the importance of continued dialogue on current & future issues, particularly with regard to citizens of both countries who are in detention.

At the outset, referring to the previous Doha negotiations, FM Muttaqi stated that a favorable opportunity now exists to normalize relations, noting that no complicated issues that can’t be resolved.
Expressing condolences over the recent earthquake in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces, the head of the U.S. delegation described his previous visit to Kabul as productive, & stressed the need for both sides to build upon past engagements in order to achieve positive outcomes.

In addition, he affirmed that his country respects the right of nations to make their own choices & does not seek to impose anything on the Afghan people.
The discussions also addressed opportunities for expanding bilateral relations in ways that would serve the interests of both nations.
