UN Under-Secretary-General Calls on Foreign Minister

UN-Under-Secretary-General for Political & Peacebuilding Affairs, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, accompanying delegation, called on IEA-Foreign Minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi.
The meeting focused on comprehensive discussions on engagement & coordination between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan & the United Nations, as well as on the Doha Process meetings.

Updating the delegation on Afghanistan’s political situation, security conditions, efforts toward economic stability, & the positive measures undertaken by the Islamic Emirate regarding the effective management of returnees & providing necessary cooperation for them, FM Muttaqi emphasized that, both to support the private sector & to ensure the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance, it is essential to lift banking restrictions on Afghanistan’s banks & release the frozen assets of Da Afghanistan Bank, so that the private sector can function normally & contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Additionally, FM Muttaqi underscored the Islamic Emirate’s serious measures against the cultivation & trafficking of narcotics in Afghanistan, while expressing concern that if narcotics cultivation outside Afghanistan within the region is not prevented, it would once again cause harm not only to Afghanistan but also to the region & engulf the world, as in the past.

Commending the positive developments in Afghanistan, particularly praising the effective management of millions of returnees & transparency in the delivery of humanitarian assistance, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo called the Islamic Emirate’s measures in counter-narcotics, the treatment of drug addicts, & other areas positive & noteworthy.
Referring to cooperation under the framework of the Doha Process concerning two working groups, counter-narcotics & support for the private sector, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo described these meetings as beneficial for all parties.

Ms. Rosemary also expressed hope that opportunities would be created for joint engagement on other aspects of the process. Furthermore, the UN Under-Secretary-General requested cooperation in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance from certain UN agencies whose aid remains suspended outside the country, emphasizing that such assistance is essential for the Afghan people.
To end, both sides expressed hope for increasing such meetings & for the further expansion of relations.
