The meeting focused on in-depth gamut of the recent diplomatic developments of IEA, suggestions of the Independent Assessment report, and upcoming Doha meeting.
Firstly, FM Muttaqi presented information in regards with the conference “Afghanistan’s Regional Cooperation Initiative” held in Kabul and the acceptance of the letter of credence of the Afghan Ambassador in Beijing, calling these promising developments of IEA in diplomatic realm.
Reiterating IEA’s desire in constructive engagement with the United Nations, FM Muttaqi appreciated the personal efforts of Mr. Senerli Oglu and expressed hope for the success of the Doha meeting.
Reiterating IEA’s position regarding Resolution 2721 of UN Security Council, Muttaqi Sahib welcomed the positive points in the Independent Assessment of Mr. Senerli Oglu, stressing that there remains no reason or need for the appointment of another special representative in the presence of UNAMA and the existing situation of Afghanistan.
Congratulating FM Muttaqi on having successfully convened Afghanistan’s Regional Cooperation Initiative, Mr. Senerli Oglu said that I closely observed the conference.
The UN coordinator provided information about Doha meeting, his recent visits and discussions, stressing that the purpose of the Doha meeting is to have continued engagement of the international community with Afghanistan through a continuous process so as to make further progress in diplomatic domain.
Mr. Senerli Oglu said that in Independent Assessment, I requested that the diplomatic presence of other countries in Kabul be increased, talks should be held about uplifting sanctions on the Central Bank of Afghanistan, and starting technical and development support to Afghanistan.
Expressing hope that the World Bank will make a positive decision about Afghanistan in the near future, Mr. Senerli Oglu said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been invited to the upcoming Doha meeting, and now there is a consensus among the participants about the IEA’s participation, hoping that IEA’s high-level delegation will participate in the Doha meeting.
To end, expressing gratitude to the UN-Special Coordinator for the information, FM Muttaqi said that the IEA desires to work together with UN, and consider the Doha meeting as a good opportunity, adding that IEA will decide on participation following receiving detailed information about the structure, agenda and composition of the meeting.
